Maybe a blue moon will rise that will send all the living to a magical sleep, allowing thier nightmares to come to life. Maybe a Vistani prophecy states that the misty borders will fall for 30 days soon, allowing Strahd and the other Darklord to meet, fight, or do whatever. Maybe some event will come and change things in Barovia.
PCs can help the kids, stop them, or just try to get away! Add a couple decades and now the freakish children of Strahd and "Tatyana" are angling for the throne of Castle Ravenloft. Too bad Tatyana is actually a shape changed Pit Fiend/Star Spawn Emmisary/Homebrew Monster. Maybe Strahd gets Tatyana finally and they start a family. Have the evil of Barovia corrupt Jander and make him the Torquemada of a Ravenloft Inquisition that seeks to snuff out even the kindest monsters from existence, maybe even including anyone that isn't an elf if you really want to turn it up. Mount Ghakis could have a multilevel dungeon filled with dark treasures from a false past. Lake Villaki can hide any number of horrible monsters or portals to other domains or even whole dungeons under it's chill glass surface. Strahd will punish their insolence, possibly by hiring the PCs to do it for him, especially if Strahd's regulars aren't up to the task. Have them start knocking off Boyars and burning villages. Gunadarkites still chaffe at being conquered by Strahd and the Barovians.

The PCs had to free and counsel the ghost of her husband and children to weaken the ooze woman enough to kill her, and it was still a hell of a fight. Basically a woman murdered her whole family with poison and eventually became this ooze queen. I had a glorious adventure in a single haunted house that I plopped into Barovia only because the PCs were there at the time. The jobs the PCs could get from that vary to mercenary work, getting press-ganged into service, happening to be trapped by a seige, any number of things. Have Strahd raise an army and attack a neighbor.
If you are running with continuous domains like in older versions of Ravenloft, then Forlorn, Hazlan and Invidia share a border with Barovia.
